The Builder for April 5th

There were twenty-one Kiwanians and three guests in attendance at our Stone Tree luncheon. Nicholas McMurray was hosted by someone who knows him very well...K Sean McMurray.

You're in Kiwanis now!

Kiwanian Paul Strimas officiated at our induction luncheon today. Our newest member Kiwanian Paul Matthies was introduced by his sponsor PE Gord Harris. K Paul is the owner/operator of Suntrail Source for Adventure in Hepworth. We hope that K Paul enjoys his service club adventure with us. PP John Prettie gave out the official builder's apron and explained its purpose.

PP Bruce Price handed out the K Kit, membership certificate and a Kiwanis ball cap. President Linda Van Aalst proudly presented a Kiwanis member's pin to Paul.

Speaker's Corner!

K John Cottrill introduced Abby Miners from Miner's Maple Products as our guest speaker on her favourite subject – the production of maple syrup. Sweet!

Abby explained that their farm has 6000 taps that must be re-tapped each spring! Spring comes knocking...

Tree sap will rise once the daytime temperature raises from minus 5 degrees Celsius to plus 5 degrees Celsius. Under perfect conditions a healthy maple tree can provide 40 liters of sap per day which when boiled down becomes just one liter of maple syrup. The syrup is hot packed to prevent mould from growing. If you store your syrup in the refrigerator it will stay fresh for a year and even longer if you freeze it.

On behalf of the club, K Ron Downs thanked Abby for a very informative and detailed talk about their maple syrup production methods.

A Fine Time!

President Linda had too-too-toonie much fun levying two dollar fines to members this week. PP John Prettie was driven to seat belt distraction after receiving a spam e-mail about a parcel at the Post Office. PE Gord will need to be dialed in to Elizabeth's cell phone usage while driving. K Doug Cleverley confessed to kicking up his heels at taking his daughter to a Highland Dance event at Niagara Falls. K Stew Andrew revealed an all expense paid trip to Killbear Provincial Park for a MustNeedRest retreat meeting. K Sean McMurray got burned for forgetting to inform K Gail Norris about a cancelled food committee meeting. K Ted Stevens helped celebrate a friend's retirement in Toronto. Cheers!

K Steve Sired confessed to a three month plus winter vacation in Florida. President Linda assessed a five dollar fine but K Steve generously paid $50. Welcome back K Steve!

It's an Honour!

PG Gary Levine had the honour of presenting K Ted Stevens with the 35 years of Kiwanian Service Certificate. Congratulations K Ted on your service to our community!

Members are reminded that this Tuesday is our Board Meeting and all Kiwanians are welcome to attend.

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

President Linda asked for volunteers to answer questions about our club at the Owen Sound Public Library Service Club Awareness Day on April 14th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. We will have an information table set up. If you are able to help, please contact P Linda.

Our thoughts go out to PLG Al Kelly who is currently in the hospital.

K Steve Sired invites all Kiwanians to take part in our Whispering Pines work party scheduled for April 21st, Kiwanis One Day. There are lots of jobs to be done including building sheds for campers, some painting, wood splitting and leaf/needle raking. Please plan to attend from 9 a.m. to noon.

PP John McLaughlin will provide a lunch for all of the workers. Wear your work gloves!

Our Kiwanis Community Yard Sale will be held at the Whispering Pines front lot on May 26th from 8 a.m. until noon. If your family or friends have anything to get rid of during spring cleaning, we will gladly turn it into cash for the club.

BMTS has generously donated temporary storage space to us behind Kiwanian Paul's at MicroAge. You can drop off items beginning on May 14th from 8 - 5. We will not be accepting large appliances or furniture. Backs aren't what they used to be....So get rid of your clutter...We'll be glad you did!

The day of the sale we'd love to see a number of Kiwanians coming out to help sell our treasures and help manage the crowds we hope will be there. Come and haggle and have some fun! Let Chair Doug Cleverley, K Paul Kirk, DPP Bob Miller or K Julia know if you'd like to help out. It's a great fun-raiser!

Special Thanks to PP John Prettie for faithfully donating his talent and pictures each week to the Builder!
