The Builder for May 11th

There were 14 Kiwanians and 3 guests in attendance at our luncheon at the Inn on the Bay for the induction of our newest member Michael Rutherford. President Susan Davey wielded the gavel welcoming all to the induction and to hear our guest speaker from Safe and Sound. Past President Peter Little was the lucky number winner. Members were reminded of the change in our meeting schedule due to the E.C.& C. convention held in Ottawa from May 16th to the 18th.


Our Newest Kiwanian!



K Mike Rutherford and his wife of 39 years, Suzanne relocated to Owen Sound from Vancouver in 2015. We are pleased to welcome them to our Kiwanis family.

DP Bob Miller conducted the installation of our newest member, Michael Rutherford. K Paul Matthies introduced Mike, brother of Mayor Bob Rutherford. PLG Linda van Aalst presented Mike the Builder's apron and District Trustee Gail Norris-McKeown gave him his certificate. K Steve Sired presented the information package and President Susan Davey awarded his Kiwanis pin.

Mike's 30 year plus career in the Financial Services industry took him from Toronto to Calgary, London to Vancouver with several banking and insurance institutions along the way. He has been retired since 2003 but not idle As a Chartered Professional Accountant, a Certified Financial Planner, Chartered Life Underwriter along with a BA from U of Guelph and BComm from the University of Windsor, he has volunteered his gift for finance as well to the St. Leonard Society and the Alzheimer's Society of B.C on their board and as their treasurer. In his spare time, Mike enjoys hiking, biking and running.

We welcome Kiwanian Mike as our newest member of the Kiwanis Club of Owen Sound.


Speaker's Corner!


PP Jack Tweddle introduced our guest speaker Dianne Eaton, the Board Chair for Safe and Sound. Dianne explained that Safe and Sound operates an after-hours emergency housing program which arranges shelter, transportation, and food, seven days a week. It is accessible daily from 4:30pm to 10 pm by calling the Emergency Housing and Support phone number. Members of the community can also receive support, help with tenancy issues, and referrals to other agencies 

Safe N Sound also operates The Space, located at 310 8th St E. It provides homeless people and those at risk of becoming homeless with access to basic needs. They also lend support as well as advocacy and referrals. Visitors to The Space can access food, shower and an opportunity to socialize. Workshops and tutoring is also available. PLG Linda van Aalst thanked our speaker for bringing us up to date on their good works..


A Fine Time!


Fines master PP Gord Harris assessed a trip tax to PLG Linda for attending her daughter Teri's wedding, to John White, in Punta Cana. Trustee Gail paid a port tax for sailing the repositioning cruise on the Chi-Cheemaun. She noted that PLG Linda was also on the same cruise with her son-in-law. DP Bob and Ann Miller paid a border tax as they returned from a trip to Kentucky. PP Peter Little was extended a thespian fine for attending a play at the Mirvish theatre. PPPE Don had a golfing weekend with his fellow swingers of sticks but they needed shovels instead as it snowed that weekend!
