Division 8 Winter Newsletter  2018

A Message From Our Lieutenant Governor

Greetings Division 8,

It is hard to believe that we have already completed the first quarter of this Kiwanis year. I hope that all of you are feeling settled in, and that you are thoroughly enjoying your respective roles.

As your LG, it was a busy start to the year, visiting most clubs in our Division to lead in the Installations of Officers within the first 2 weeks of my term. It was a pleasure to visit your clubs, and to meet your members who work hard and inspire good work in your communities.

Lieutenant Governor

Stephanie Worthington

As was reported in our fall newsletter, we had the honour of hosting Governor Bobby Moo Young on his official visit from Montego Bay, Jamaica in October, 2017.  Time with Bobby was fun and productive, spending time with members of the Kiwanis Clubs of Barrie, Owen Sound and the newly Chartered Kiwanis Club of Huntsville Muskoka.

To date, the highlight of the year was the addition of the new club to our Kiwanis family and celebrating the Charter of the Kiwanis Club of Huntsville Muskoka. The celebration took place at “The Mill on Main” in Huntsville on Saturday, November 25th.  The evening included welcomes and warm wishes from members of our Division, but also from LG’s Terry and Allen from Divisions 9 & 10.  We were also thrilled to be joined by Immediate Past Governor Phil Rossy and his wife, Dianne from Ottawa.

Our Kiwanis ECC Convention is scheduled to take place in Montego Bay, Jamaica, May 17-19th, 2018. Each club is permitted to send three voting delegates. PLGs are able to vote on behalf of another club if clubs are not able to send their alloted delegates.

For more information on registration, and to book your room, please visit http://www.kiwanisecc.org/ecc-district-convention.

I am also very excited about the 2018 Kiwanis International Convention, being held in Las Vegas Nevada, June 28th to July 1st, 2018. From workshops, to speakers, to voting, it will be exciting.

For more information about the International Convention, please visit http://www.kiwanis.org/convention/2018.

This will be a convention for the history books. It is important for clubs to select their two delegates to attend the convention, and work for our very own International Trustee, Gary Levine from the Kiwanis Club of Owen Sound on his campaign for the position of Kiwanis International Vice President.

I am certain that everyone in Division 8 will continue to support and encourage Gary throughout the election. We are rooting for you Gary, and we wish you all the best!

As we embark on the 2nd quarter, I look forward to visiting your clubs. I would ask that Club Presidents and Secretaries contact me with specific dates that you wish me to attend.

In the meantime, please plan to participate in the upcoming Division Caucus Meeting, to be held online, via Go To Meeting, scheduled for the evening at Monday, February 5th.  A time and link to the meeting will be sent to clubs shortly.

Thank you to everyone for making me feel welcome as your new LG in the first few months of my term.

I look forward to continuing to work alongside all of you as our year continues to unfold.

Respectfully submitted,

LG Steph Worthington

In Memoriam for PLG Gordon Hume

PLG Gordon Hume

1925-2017

We are saddened by the loss of a dedicated Kiwanian who served his parishes, his family, his clubs and divisions with honour.

Gordon was born in 1925 and passed away at the age of 91 in August, 2017.

He joined the Casa Loma Kiwanis Club in  1971,  shortly after coming to St. Matthew’s United Church in Toronto  in 1970. Gordon served as Lt Governor for Division 7,  Eastern Canada & Caribbean, from 1993-94. He served as President of the Casa Loma and Collingwood Clubs. He was an active member of the Meaford Kiwanis Club. He attended numerous Conventions in many different countries.  He never lost his love for Kiwanis or stopped believing it was the best Service Organization going. His wife, PP Helen Hume, is comforted by all the wonderful memories they created together in service to others.
