The Builder February 3rd

A Fine Time!

Kiwanian Gord Harris, our ever faithful Front of House organizer, reminded us to fill out our attendance forms when we arrive. Immediate Past Governor Gary Levine, President Bob Miller and Kiwanian Julia Levine filled the fine box instead.

While K Phil Gignac was concerned several Ks were not wearing their name badge, K Ted Horton cross-examined him. He noted K Phil had not provided a badge for his guest, Blake Bonham while K Ted had done so for his guest Dennis Hertz. The jury’s still out on that one.

K Don Sweatman was greeted with a hearty round of applause for his arrival and a hearty round of boos for PP Dave Parsons, PP Peter Little and PP Don for their cell phone, phone-pas. A trip to Vegas for PP Dave, skiing in BC for Russ Pierson and Spaski for K Guy and PP Don helped to fill our coffers. We believe that involves slaloming in bathing suits.

PP Jed Philips enjoyed his snowshoe outing despite misplacing his wife Jane at the Grotto. K Gord donated a Happy Loonie and a hearty thank you for his solar panels which are now generating energy back to the grid, topping up his retirement fund. We’ll think of you K Gord when we next open our hydro bill…shocking!

A Round of Applause!

Thank you to Kiwanian Bert Hood and Kiwanian Belinda Bowler for representing us at our January Terrific Kids assemblies. Thank you to PLG Al Kelly for volunteering to attend Alexandra School and PP Don Sweatman for his willingness to return to Keppel Sarawak to shake the hands of very proud TKs in February.

We appreciated all those who participated in our Club survey and for taking the time to include comments. You have until February 8th to take part. The results will be studied by our Past Presidents’ committee and your feedback will help to steer our year ahead. PP Dave Parsons was our 50-50 winner. K Stu Luckhardt was our Lucky Number auctioneer for tickets to the Owen Sound Little Theatre, courtesy of PP John Prettie.

Thank you as well to PP John for leading the K Khoir yet again. K Stew Andrew will be our intrepid reporter at club meetings to assist Secretary Julia in creating our bulletin, The Builder. K Stew may need your help at meetings he is unable to attend.

Speakers Corner!

PP Jed Philips spoke to us about the Membership Growth Committee upcoming plans. They are working to take our club from “good to great”! President Bob updated us on several items. PP Clarke McLeod and K Paul Kirk have agreed to review our financial accounting systems and records. They will recommend any changes and improvements that they might consider to be necessary.

At January’s Board meeting, a motion was passed that all future projects must present a business plan before a decision is made. Our number one fundraiser, Whispering Pines, will be providing $40 000 to our budget this year. Only one delegate rather than two will be sent to the Kiwanis International Convention in Geneva, Switzerland due to the cost.

We hope to send several delegates to our Eastern Canada and Caribbean Convention at Blue Mountain on May 12 - 14. Please email President Bob at if you are interested in attending and volunteering.
