The Builder for January 29th, 2015

There were 20 Kiwanians present for our special induction meeting held at Stonetree Golf and Fitness Club. We also welcomed guests: Candy Horton, Ann Miller, Ruth Parsons, Val Prettie, Cecile Feltis and Grace McMurray. President Paul Strimas asked PP Dave Parsons to kindly lead us in the Objects of Kiwanis. Treasurer Paul Kirk read our invocation and K Gabe Nowak conducted a song with a lot of honking going on.

PP Don Sweatman was today's auctioneer with the winner of the Kiwanis broach being Candy Horton. The Kiwanis tie went to K Stew Andrew. Our Lucky Number winner for this meeting was DP Bob Miller.

Aprons, Awards and Applause!

K Don King, K Kate Walsh, K Sean McMurray

K Stew invited PP Andy Drury to tell us all about Kiwanian Don King's background and his previous Kiwanis experience. K Bruce Jobe had the pleasure of introducing Kate Walsh and revealing her history to our club.

Kiwanian Stew Andrew hosted the induction portion of our program involving several members of our club.

PP Don Sweatman had the honour of presenting K Don and K Kate with their Builder's aprons and the tradition of member signing the apron. Be sure to get your names on them for posterity. DP Bob Miller then came forward and presented Don and Kate with their name badges and information kits.

DP Bob Miller welcomed former Kiwanian Sean McMurray back after a brief absence. DP Bob presented all three Kiwanians with a Kiwanis hat. P Paul gave K Don and K Kate with their Membership Pins and expressed his best wishes to all.

PP Dave Parson and Legion of Honour Recipient PP John Prettie

PP Dave Parsons and DP Miller took over PP John's dedicated Kiwanis Camera Service so that he could finally be on the other end of the lens for a change. K Ted Horton presented PP John with a Kiwanis Cap and regaled us with stories of PP John’s accomplishments and exploits.

P Paul presented Val Prettie with a bouquet of flowers in recognition of her support of PP John and her dedicated volunteering, as well, with our club. PP Dave Parsons came forward as he was PP John's sponsor some 35 years ago. PP Dave presented the Legion of Honour certificate and pin for PP John's 35 years of dedicated service to our club. PP Dave saluted PP John and his accomplishments. So glad you are both still members with us!

PP John thanked everyone for his Legion of Honour award. He revealed his Builder's apron and spoke of the many Kiwanians who signed it years ago. A tip of the hat and congratulations to PP John on his first 35 years in Kiwanis!

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

Our upcoming fundraiser at the Bayshore on February 14th is in need of your helping hands. K Russ Pierson reminded us that PP Kevin Dandeno and his band 1969 Revisited will be performing. Tickets are available at Have1.com, Fromangers Music Store and The Dock. If you have Smart Serve training or have a friend who does, please sign up to help.

Decorators, raffle ticket sellers, greeters, cleaners etc are all needed.

Treasurer Paul Kirk made a detailed presentation of the club's annual budget approved at this past Board meeting. He noted some changes from previous years including an increase in the KKO budget from $10000 to $15000. Our annual gift to the Grey County Music Festival has had a similar increase to $15000.

K Ted Horton updated us on the purchase of seven cabins for Whispering Pines. He outlined some of the costs and discounts he has been able to secure, including the donation of two cabins by the Horton’s. K Ted is looking for other businesses or individuals to follow suit in this new initiative at our campground.
