The Kiwanis Club of Owen Sound

President Don Sweatman and the Kiwanis Club of Owen Sound area enjoying a more restful January after a very hectic November and December.

Our club hosted Santa again this year at our 72nd annual Kiwanis Santa Claus parade. We were thankful for the efforts of local businesses, organizations, individuals in our community and our Kiwanians in making it another successful parade.

November was not just the parade month but also kicked off weeks of selling Christmas trees, seven days a week, hundreds of volunteer hours in all weather. It takes a lot of members to make it happen and we are grateful that the community is so supportive. We sold out early again this year.

Speakers are the backbone of our luncheon meeting programs.

Honorary K Ann Kelly and Nancy Hay

Nancy Hay was our speaker for Remembrance Day. Nancy spoke eloquently about her experiences volunteering with the Invictus Games held in Toronto. She worked about at athlete village at the Sheraton Centre where 17 nations and 550 athletes gathered.

The Grey County Kiwanis Music Festival Chair, John McLachlan attended a recent luncheon.

John thanked the club for being a leading sponsor of the festival for 86 years. He shared information about the adjudicators, the awards granted to many deserving students and the value of striving for excellence.

John McLachlan

John indicated that it is hard to find volunteers to help year round as well as during the festival.  It is equally difficult to raise money with approximately $35,000 per year required to keep it running. The festival runs from April 2nd to the 13th. Our club donates $15 000 each year with two of our members sitting on the Festival board and many other Ks working during the event itself.

This past week, Andy Foster spoke about the Arden Center at the Alliance Church where they teach English to ten classes a week, covering all age groups of new immigrants. This is made possible with the help of some 50 volunteers. Our Club made a donation of $3500 to purchase books for the center.

Our club is looking forward to sending delegates to our ECC convention in May. We are proud of our club member, IT Gary Levine, and heartily support his bid for VP of Kiwanis International. We know he represents us with honour at the International level.

In Memoriam

We were greatly saddened by the loss of our fellow club member, Kiwanian Lorne Rich, on December 30th. We will miss his smile and his laughter. He was true gentleman and friend.
