The Builder for October 4th, 2012

The first meeting of President Gord Harris's year was a lively affair attended by 24 Kiwanians and two guests. One of our guests, Brian Tannahill, was kind enough to play the keyboard for our songs. K Joanne Horton hosted her brother Paul who sat at K Ted Horton's table...a real family affair.

A Packed Speakers' Corner!

Our KKO Chair, Belinda Bowler gave us an annual report on the wonderful work that the Kiwanis Club has been doing for children in need. The $9600.00 spent this year included orthodontics in partnership with Dr. Brown, music lessons, bike helmets, ribbons for the Cross Country run, sports equipment along with Freaky Fridays at the Marion Rail Museum to name but a few.

"KKO is the heart of Kiwanis...helping to build our community, one child at a time."

Brian Tannahill, spouse of K Belinda, shared with us one of the songs he has written for Kiwanis. We joined together to sing along.

The chorus is:

We Build, Build, Build for the Children

One precious heart at a time

Always reaching beyond us

We Build Build Build, we're Kiwanis!

P Gord introduced our newest member K Reg Martin. Orginally a sheep farmer, K Reg has actively retired to Bass Lake selling firework from his property. He and his wife Pam Green are proud parents of two daughters, Johanna and Beth along with two granddaughters as well. K Reg is avid about all outdoor sports. PP John Prettie officiated the induction.

Be sure to sign K Reg's apron at the next Kiwanis meeting. Remember that this week is a Round Table due to our special night on October 13th

DP Bob presented the certificate and the apron while PG Gary Levine gave K Reg his membership kit.

A Fine Time!

DP Bob Miller confessed to wine tours in Niagara Falls and being highly entertained in London where he and Ann went to see 42nd Street. Speaking of entertaining...that is exactly what K Guy Chinouard did for his step-grandkids by taking them to Disney World in Florida. What a guy...

PP Bruce Price shared the news of his 10 day trip to New York, Vermont, and New Hampton. K Joanne Horton's eighteen day trip to Peru cost her a $10.00 fine. For crossing the Severn in his new Dodge Journey, PP Don fueled our coffers by adding another $8.00.

K Ted Horton's told of his trip to Napanee to clean up downed trees and to make repairs. This is the same K Ted that had a bus incident on his trip to Europe. If he asks you to join him on an excursion, you should perhaps be cautious... K Susan Davey had her own road trip adventure to Kingston along with her mother Billie. It was a gas!

PP Peter Little was in admiration of his daughter Heather's half iron man held recently at Deerhurst. PG Gary and K Julia were in awe of the talents demonstrated at Amaluna, the latest Cirque de Soleil show in Toronto. K Doug Cleverly escaped his Toronto Brazilian night at the El Mocambo unharmed.

Breaking News!

DP Bob Miller announced that he has connected with West Hill Secondary School and St. Mary's High School to send five students to the Key Leader Weekend on November 2nd to the 4th. The students are in for a fantastic expense paid leadership experience. Thanks for making this happen, DP Bob.
