The Builder for August 18th, 2016

President Bill Sornberger wielded the gavel as 13 Kiwanians along with their guests were in attendance at our luncheon meeting held at the Best Western Inn on the Bay. Kiwanian Doug Cleverley was the lucky number of the day.

Speaker's Corner!

Past President Peter Little introduced our guest speaker, Maria Canton. While Maria originally is from Southern Alberta, she worked as a newspaper reporter for almost two decades in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, at The Calgary Herald and National Post, before moving into the theatre business. She is also an active volunteer in the community, currently on the YMCA board of directors, she also takes part in the breakfast club team at Sydenham School.

Maria informed the club about the history of the Roxy and the many events that are coming up at the Roxy in the next year. You can look forward to the OSLT performance of A White Christmas which opens on November 9th-26th or a dramatic reading of A Christmas Carol on December 8th, the Next Generation Leahy's on December 9th and a County Christmas night of music on the 10th. The Roxy theatre is the performance centre of our community. PP Kevin Dandeno presented Maria with a certificate and Kiwanis pen as a thank you for speaking to the club.

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

PLG Linda Van Aalst spoke about Camp Quality and told us about last weekend's club sponsored BBQ and about the members who served the families. Unfortunately, the need for a special camp for children with cancer has grown so much that it is having to move. We wish to thank the many Kiwanians who have volunteered to work the BBQ over the years. DP Bob Miller took all the left over food from the camp and the BBQ to OShare.

Our September 1st Social!

Kiwanians and guests, we look forward to everyone coming to our club social to celebrate a great summer and to ring in the month of September. We are guests at the home of K Fred Druyf. Let's take him up on his great offer to host our club. He is living dangerously...

Please bring a lawn chair, either a dessert or salad to share and your own beverage of choice.

Trustee Travels!

L to R: IT Gary Levine, Ned the Lobsta..., GE Bill Jenkins and Governor Bart Stevens at the New England/Bermuda District convention in Cromwell, Connecticut.

Our International Trustee Gary Levine and DS Julia spent much of August travelling on behalf of Kiwanis International. The first week IT Gary was in Quad City with the Iowa/Illinois District. The second week of August found him near Dallas with the Texas/Oklahoma District. He has just returned from the New England/ Bermuda District.

In each district, Gary delivered workshops, keynote addresses, along with counselling incoming Governors. Julia, not idle, helped package1600 dehydrated meals to feed 8000 in Honduras. This week, IT Gary is on the road the ECC Regional Trustee meeting in Ottawa.
