The Builder for February 4th
K Paul Matthies and PP Gord Harris greeted 19 Kiwanians and 3 guests for our luncheon meeting held at the Best Western, Inn on the Bay. PLG Linda van Aalst wielded the gavel as President Bill Sornberger was on vacation chasing a golf ball in Florida.
Guests included K Sean McMurray's daughter, Grace, PP Gord Harris' friend Fred Druyt and our guest speaker, Alice Wannan from the Salvation Army. PP Jack Tweddle held the lucky number in our draw today.
K David Kennedy introduced Alice. She advised us of all of the wonderful service the Salvation Army is able to provide in our community. She explained that the Red Kettle Campaign, a Canadian tradition for 125 years, is their primary fundraiser with an annual goal of $80,000.
It is often a challenge to get volunteers to give two hours of their time to watch over a kettle. They require about 200 people from November 19 to December 24 each year. Should you wish to help out coming year, please be sure to let K David know.
Hear Ye! Hear Ye!
PP Peter Little advised us that our Board of Directors were asked to consider a financial donation to Syrian children, noting that our community now has welcomed a new family consisting of two adults and children 10, 8, 6, and 2 along with a baby on the way. The family spent three difficult years in a camp in Lebanon. The Board has set aside $5000 for assistance to Syrian children in our community. These funds will be administered by KKO.
PP Jack Tweddle. gave a further update on PP Dr. Gilbert Howey's medical situation. Gilbert is working very hard on his rehabilitation and has some movement now in his toes and fingers. He is so grateful for the cards sent by the club members. Please keep them coming as they lift his spirits!

Christmas Tree Chair K Jim McManaman gave an oral report on behalf of his committee. We wish to thank Royal LePage Reality and Northridge Property Management for the use of their parking lot and the use of their business as a money drop off location. Thanks as well goes to PP Paul Strimas and Greg Rodgers for doing the tree deliveries, to Treasurer Paul Kirk and Shelly Shakes for picking up the money and handling the finances, to PP Don Sweatman for his help with the insurance and John Davey for offering to do the snow plowing. Close to $11 000 in profit was the result of selling 778 trees. This would not have been possible without the 29 Ks and 8 family members pitching in. Another job well done Chair Jim!
A Fine Time!
DP Bob Miller was the Mystery Greeter who noted that K Russ Pierson and PP Andy Drury had missed him. Those receiving applause for being after the gong were K Jim McManaman, K David Kennedy and K Ron Downs.
PP Andy Drury paid the price for his trips to Palm Springs and La Jolla.
K Kerry Ann was thrilled to have travelled to Mexico for the wedding of her daughter. K Joanne Horton had a special tax imposed for purchasing a new BMW – X5D outside of our fair city. PP Andy Drury appealed to PP Peter for the lack of songs at the beginning of the meeting but PP Peter made up for that deficit by leading the Fare Thee Well Song to conclude our meeting.
