The Builder for September 13th

There were twenty-four Kiwanians and three guests, Scott Lovell, Honorary Kiwanian Ann Kelly and Dennis Kefalas (Owen Sound's Director of  Public Works and Engineering ) in attendance at our luncheon chaired by President PP Jack Tweddle.

PP Jack Tweddle wielded the gavel in President Don Sweatman's absence.

All were warmly greeted at the door by PP Gord Harris and Kiwanian Mike Rutherford.

PP Peter Little kept everyone on pitch as we sang our gathering song, O Canada and grace together. The Objects of Kiwanis were recited by PLG Linda van Aalst followed by an introduction of guests and the recognition of birthdays and anniversaries.

Speaker's Corner!

International Trustee Gary Levine introduced our speaker, Colleen Purdon, Chair of the Sweetwater Music Festival. It runs from September 21st to the 23rd with events at the Leith Church and the Roxy. The calendar of events is packed with many of the events already sold out.

From Friday night's Party Like It Is 1689 to free concerts on Saturday for children to jazz, there is something for everyone! Should you wish more information, please check out their website for available tickets.

Michelle Kobryn thanked our speaker for leaving the Truth and Reconciliation event she was participating in at the Bayshore to come to speak to us today.

Our Honour to Present!

LGE Susan Davey presents Honorary Kiwanian Dr. Gilbert Howey with his certificate and pin of recognition as our Honorary Kiwanian.

PP Jack Tweddle gave a moving tribute to his good friend of over 60 years, PP Gilbert Howey. PP Jack outlined Gilbert's brilliant career. Following his many years of study from undergraduate, Masters in Political Science, to M.D. and specialist in psychiatry, Dr. Howey became the first Chief Resident of Psychiatry at the Clarke Institute in Toronto.

His career found him in private practise in Toronto and as resident psychiatrist at our hospital in Owen Sound as well.

Music was a lifelong passion that began with singing in the Kiwanis Music Festival at six years of age. Many years of performance ensued with the Toronto Mendelsohn Choir and the York Minister Park Baptist Church.

Upon retiring to his family homestead outside Chatsworth, Gilbert has continued to use his vocal talents to the delight of all who have the opportunity to hear him.

He was the Past President and resident pianist for the local Golden K club, joining our own club in October 2015 upon its closure. A horrific car accident in December of that same year left Gilbert having to courageously face challenges we can little imagine.

Our club was privileged to confer upon Dr. Gilbert Howey the title of Honorary Kiwanian of the Kiwanis Club of Owen Sound.

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

Golf Committee Chair Warren Elder reviewed the progress of the golf tournament planning. Members are asked to please email Warren the shirt size you will need. You are asked to wear the golf shirt on tournament day. You can then pick up your shirt at Steve Sired’s shop, Mr. Transmission on Monday or Tuesday next week. Should you wish to come for the golf tournament dinner ($25) please let Warren know asap.

Party Time!

Please mark September 27th as a club dinner you won't miss, to thank President Don, his outgoing board members and welcome President Michelle and her board. Traditionally this evening is our biggest turn out of the year. A doodle will be coming your way very soon. (Thanks IT Gary)

Bring your spouse, your partner or friend to pack the Inn on the Bay. We will be formally inducting our newest member as well, Tim Brown. Let's all celebrate the successes of the past year and our hopes for the year to come.
